How it started

Around the turn of the century, Dr. P. Upender Rao saw a widening gap between what India grew and what it could keep. Perishables were plentiful; the infrastructure to store them was not, and food standards were rarely a priority.

He founded Cold Care Services in 2000 as an EPC company for cold storages. From the start the firm challenged how cold stores were built in India: where most facilities were conventional civil structures, Coldcare engineered steel-supported insulated panel buildings that went up in a fraction of the time.

That instinct for better construction produced a run of early innovations: rack-supported, steel-structured PUF-panel cold storage; one of India's first multi-commodity adjustable-racking cold stores in 2006; and in 2015 a 10,000 MT dehumidified rack cold storage for two-tonne jumbo seed bags, among the largest of its kind in India.

Today Coldcare is the flagship of a group that spans the cold chain — EPC construction, facility maintenance, warehousing, reefer logistics and agritech — and has engineered more than 100 projects across India.

What has not changed

The company still does one thing: design and build stores that hold the conditions the commodity needs, and keep holding them twenty years later. It is still led by the family that founded it, and the founder still walks sites on commissioning day.
