Seed storage

Seed storage is a humidity problem, not a cold problem.

Dehumidified storage designed so that what goes in germinates when it comes out — 10–12 °C at 45–50% RH, engineered around your bag, your season and your handling.

What makes a seed store different

Any refrigeration plant will hold ten degrees. Holding forty-five per cent relative humidity at ten degrees, through a Telangana summer, with doors opening several times a day, is what separates a seed store from a cold store.

It takes four things: desiccant dehumidification sized against the real infiltration load, an envelope that is genuinely sealed rather than nominally insulated, a door and anteroom arrangement that stops moist air walking in, and a control philosophy that runs the dehumidifiers and the plant together instead of against each other.

Designed around the bag

Two-tonne jumbo bags, 50 kg bags on pallets and loose bins are three different buildings. The bag decides the racking, the racking decides the deck loads and the aisles, and those decide the capacity you can actually use. We start there, not at the capacity number in the project report.

Seasonal, not continuous

Seed stores fill fast and empty fast. The plant has to pull down a season's intake within the cooling window and then idle efficiently for months. Sizing it only on the steady-state load gives you a store that never catches up in the first three weeks — the three weeks that matter.

Seed storage questions

What humidity should a seed cold store hold?

For most field-crop seed, 10-12 degrees C at 45-50% relative humidity. The temperature is straightforward; the humidity is what needs desiccant dehumidification, a tight envelope and doors that seal, and it is where most general-purpose cold stores fail when they are asked to hold seed.

Can I store seed in an ordinary cold storage?

You can store it. Whether it germinates next season is a different question. A store designed for fruit runs at 85-90% RH, which is the opposite of what seed needs. Converting an existing store is possible — it means dehumidification, envelope sealing and usually a new door schedule.

Do you handle two-tonne jumbo bags?

Yes. The 10,000 MT store we built for Kaveri Seeds was designed around two-tonne jumbo bags on racking, which sets the deck loads, the aisle widths and the handling equipment from the first drawing.
