Ice and frozen storage under one roof
An ice plant and a frozen store are two different machines sharing one refrigeration system. The ice side runs hard and continuously; the storage side has to hold a steady low temperature however hard the ice side is working. Sizing the plant for both at once, rather than for each separately, is what keeps the running cost sensible.
Why low temperature is unforgiving
At minus eighteen degrees every weakness in the envelope shows. Panel joints, door seals, floor insulation and the vapour barrier matter more than they do in a chill store, because the temperature difference across the wall is more than twice as large. Get the vapour barrier wrong and the panel core takes on moisture, the insulation value falls, and the plant runs longer every year to hold the same temperature.
